James Allan Stonemasons (Edinburgh) Before & Afters

These stonemasonry pictures feature a sandstone cottage our stonemasons carefully restored in East Lothian near Edinburgh. The building, prior to stone restoration, was covered in a nasty cement based render.

Old Stonemasonry Render Removed:

When this was removed, our client and the Local Authority (It is a listed, historic structure) and i have to admit myself also, were horrified to see just how poor the underlying masonry was. The client and Local Authority agent were sure that it was too poor to be saved, however we convinced them it could be, and the photographs prove we were correct.

Stone Replacement:

Having carefully removed the existing render, we then set about cutting out the decayed stone and replacing this with good quality natural stone of similar colours, sizes and shapes.

During this process we replaced a rotten steel lintol with a new sandstone one and formed a jamb detail up the sides of the door. At this juncture we also formed a new window that was formally formed with bricks etc. This was all dressed from reclaimed stone. No new masonry was used. All of the above dressed masonry was built with lime mortars.

Re-pointing with Lime Mortar:

Upon completion of the extensive building work (We replaced around 50% of the stone), we then repointed the entire elevation in an appropriate lime mortar. The building was very close to the sea so we elected for a durable mix for our lime repointing.

Lithomex Stonemasonry Repairs:

Finally, we restored the skew-putt and skew coping stones. These are all lithomex stone repairs. Lithomex is a lime based stone repair compound, and is the best on the market.

We are very proud of this job, and our client is delighted with the results. This is all possible due to our Edinburgh stonemasons expertise in stone building, stone restoration and lime pointing.
